The thyroid gland is one of the most important in our bodies. It controls almost every organ and when not working properly can cause hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Problems with the thyroid gland can lead to heart disease, infertility, kidney disease, liver disease, osteoporosis and other health problems.
There is a strong link between thyroid disease and autoimmune diseases like diabetes, arthritis, lupus, etc. If you or your family members have been diagnosed with any autoimmune disease be sure to talk to your doctor about getting your thyroid checked. One of the most common forms of thyroid disease and of autoimmune disease is Hashimoto’s Disease.
Here’s a link to an assessment tool for your thyroid health. This will give you more information on your risks for thyroid disease and information on the different types of thyroid disease.
If you feel a lump on your neck, have trouble swallowing or breathing, feel hoarse or feel pain in your throat tell your doctor right away. These are some of the symptoms of thyroid cancer.
Get the information that is available to you and speak to your doctor about having your thyroid testing done.

Thyroid health is very important! Another sign of thyroid
dysfunction is a low body temp. For as long as I can remember
the only time that I ever had a normal body temp. 98.6 was
if I was sick. If your doctor runs a thyroid test and you
fall in the “low-normal” range and does nothing, I would
get a second opinion. In ‘05 I found out that I had Follicular
Thyroid Cancer and no telling how long I had it.

@Mandy, so sorry to hear that you had Thryoid cancer. Are you ok now?
@ Michael I hope that your sister-in-law goes to the doctor to get checked out. There may be more going on than just a cold. I pray not though.

Also be very aware if you’re tired a lot, have “goosebumps” on your arms or legs that don’t seem to go away, and if you feel like you’re having trouble remembering simple things. Severe mood swings, dry skin, brittle nails and hair can also be other symptoms. For women random periods and heavy bleeding can be a major symptom.
I’m now having my thyroid checked monthly. I have the family history and many symptoms, but so far I’m in the clear. I’m being tested for Hashimoto’s as it’s sometimes very hard to diagnose properly. Symptoms can change drastically overnight.
My sister was diagnosed at 17 with Hashimoto’s, and it took almost 5 years to get a proper diagnosis. My father was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few months ago, and it took visiting 2 different doctors to get a diagnosis. Don’t ever hesitate to get a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th opinion!
