Doing Something About It

As I write about health awareness months on my blog I hope to spread the word and educate. But there are other things that can be done too. I hope that I can convince you to not be a bystander but instead to take part by doing one or more of the following:

You can donate to the cause. Find the non-profit that either sponsors the awareness month or that funds the most research, or provides the most care, etc. and make a financial donation. This is a personal decision based on what you think is important. You can also research how much money is spent by non-profits or charities on things like Administrative Costs so you can feel secure your donation is being spent wisely. The Charity Navigator does a good job of this.

You can help with fundraising. Most of the awareness month sites have links for you to download posters, fundraising kits and images or other material that you can use on your blog, emails, myspace or facebook account etc. You can also get your work place involved in raising money through various means. If you work for a large company it’s possible that they may match your efforts.

You can share the information. Almost the same as above, but instead of asking for money you’re helping to spread the word. We as bloggers can do a lot to create buzz.

You can volunteer. Many charities have local chapters that need assistance. Call the national chapter and ask if you can do some mailings for them. Volunteer online. Some charities are not nationally known and what to create an online presence. See if you can help them. Go Geeks!

Of course there are charities for every disease and health condition. Don’t burn yourself out by doing too much. Pick and choose what is important to you. Remember that once you do get involved you will begin to get those fundraising phone calls and mail. The American Institute of Philanthropy provides information on ending these calls and mail solicitations.
