Eating Healthy, When You’re Not

Raising Fit & Healthy Kids Guide

It’s work to get out of bed to go the bathroom. Taking a shower is out of the question. You’re wearing the same pajamas for two days now and haven’t brushed your teeth either. Forget about your hair.

You’re sick, feeling like crud. And worst of all you’re alone for most of the day. What do you do about eating? When I feel this way there’s times I have to force myself to eat because I don’t even have an appetite. But sometimes, my stomach just rumbles from hunger. I’ve found myself dreaming of food, big meals like Thanksgiving dinner with Turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole and apple pie only to wake up drooling.

What I’ve learned to do is always have some healthy frozen dinners handy. Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice are good ones. I try to stay away from anything with too much spices because I don’t know if my stomach will handle it.

I also keep some canned soups on hand. Be careful of sodium in these. Campbell’s Healthy Request soups taste good and with some salt free crackers they are easy to prepare.

Although I hate to do it, I can call my church and expect a few meals that just need heating up to be brought over very quickly. They are always happy to help.

It’s important to eat right even when you feel sick. Your body will heal or your flare will get better quicker. If you’re taking medications, it is important to have food in your stomach so you don’t feel any nausea.

Do the best you can to eat. Your body will thank you.

Healthy or Not

  2. Hi Connie, Yes! Sometimes don’t feel like eating, but when I do, it seems like it’s when I’m least physically able to fix something.

I too have discovered Campbell’s Healthy Requests. (no msg!)

I have a new condition in which I can only eat liquids and oh so soft foods, so I’m finding the food issue even more challenging.

What works best for me is getting food prepped in the morning so it’s easy to grab later on. (IE. Can of soup opened and in a mug ready in the frig to zap in the microwave. Pre-packaged cups of applesause and healthy pudding ready in the frig to grab and eat. Don’t even have to open a jar or take a bowl from the cupboard.)

Great topic Connie, as I think most of us deal with the “how to eat healthy when your not” challenge. Even getting to the grocery store to buy food is difficult and impossible for some.
